Synopsis

Egremont situated in the North West corner of England this small historic Market Town with its origins in the 12th century, lies almost equal distance in road miles between Carlisle in the North, Penrith in the East and Barrow in the South.

The town nestles in the beautiful lake Ennerdale. Its backdrop of western fells shelters it from the icy blasts of winter's North Easterly winds. The climate and weather is determined by its unusual situation, close to both sea and fell.
A superb little town in a most delightful part of Western England.

The book Discovering Egremont written by E. Alan Read was first published in 1992, republished in 1995 and now after many requests is to be republished in 2000.

Discovering Egremont makes no claims to be a formal history; rather a substantial collection of informal visits to all parts of the town. It looks in depth at what lies behind the present day face of Egremont.
It is a jigsaw of fact and comment which more or less comments on the century. It wanders purposefully along the wonderful broad Main Street and into little known courts and byeways. It tells of past mills, long forgotten buildings, through the ancient Market Place and into the Castle grounds. This is no skimped town trail but a substantial insight into the ancient town of Egremont.

The authors knowledge of Egremont's heritage is encyclopedic. Almost house by house, building by building it plot change and development. It identifies industrial and commercial premises. It recalls old customs and legends, sketches unusual personalities.
It contains lots of vintage photographs, it is a visual record of yesterday. Victorian residents street parties, pit disaster, floods, Crab Fair days, are all superbly printed on good quality paper.

Aptly named, it is a journey of discovery. The book is already in homes in almost every country in the world where Egremothians or their ancestors now live.
It is used by the local schools during history lessons, children can be seen following the route around town, questing for the places described with great interest.

No actual history of the township of Egremont has ever been written but this book helps formulate the idea that a very interesting historical town deserves one.
