Synopsis

The latest book explains the origins of the town's name, traces the coming of the Normans and the subsequent structures to form part of the West Coast defenses in the building of the Castle.

It deals with the various families involved in the Castle's history and development of the town. Takes you through the trails and tribulations of the invasion of the Norman French and the often bloody incursions of their Scottish neighbours. It tells of how the town developed under the guide of the Lords of Egremont and its further evolution into a busy Market Town under the leadership of its entrepeneurs. It gives an insight into some of the known and often unknown men of distinction.

The writing honors the names of some of the best loved characters down the years and brings the thoughts and aspirations of the townsfolk up to the present moment. It is a town to be proud of, a town where history is written every day, the recent floods a good example.
The people will as always continue to diversify, some will leave for other parts to seek their fortune, but as their forebears have done down the centuries will always remain Egremothians at heart. No matter where or how far they may roam Egremont will always be called home. It is a tiny piece of England that will call them back. Deep down in their hearts they will yearn to return.
Those who have left will wish they had stayed whilst those who stayed will wish they had left. This is an indefinable thought that remains with us throughout our lives and will never alter.

The book contains a number of superb pen and ink drawings by local artist John Armstrong along with many old and new previously unpublished photographs.

A book that is a MUST for all who were, or are, or are to be Egremothians.
